Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a permanent type of hair removal that is done via very concentrated laser light. The laser sends high intensity heat into the individual hair follicles, which causes the pigment within those follicles to be destroyed. The microscopic remains of the hair pigment are absorbed in the blood and will quickly leave the body. Laser hair removal is permanent because it actually damages the hair follicles to the point that they're unable to create new hair.

What does laser hair removal feel like?

At CN Medical Aesthetics, client comfort is the top priority. For this reason, the Cynosure MPX elite edition device is typically used for hair removal. This laser is virtually pain-free. The ALMA Harmony XL laser is another excellent option for laser hair removal. It has a special chilled tip to make the hair removal process comfortable even on skin types that may not respond well to other hair removal lasers.

How long does it take to remove all the hair in a single area?

The laser hair removal process typically takes half an hour or less. Most patients need a series of treatments to make sure that all hair growth is dealt with. The laser eliminates hair during the anagen phase, which is the time during which it grows actively. If hair is in the early anagen phase (the start of hair growth,) the catagen phase (when hair starts to regress,) or the telogen phase (when there isn't growth,) the laser can't remove it. Generally, about 25% of the hair in the treatment area is in the anagen phase at any given time. For this reason, it often takes about 6 total laser hair removal sessions to completely treat an area. Each session is spaced about a month apart to allow the next cycle of hair to enter the anagen phase.

What happens after laser hair removal?

After a laser hair removal session, the skin may be slightly red or sensitive in the treatment area, much like a mild sunburn. A cooling aloe vera based gel can be used if patients experience any discomfort. Patients should avoid sun exposure, including indoor tanning, for at least a few days after laser hair removal.
